Decimal to Fraction Converter
Convert any decimal to a simplified fraction or mixed number, with the nearest fraction for a chosen maximum denominator (halves up to 1/64 for rulers).
How to use it
- Type the decimal, such as 0.375, 2.75 or 0.333.
- The exact fraction is the decimal written over a power of ten and simplified.
- Pick a maximum denominator to find the closest simple fraction, for example sixteenths for woodworking measurements.
How it works
To convert a terminating decimal, write the digits over 10, 100, 1000 and so on, then divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor: 0.375 = 375/1000 = 3/8. A repeating decimal such as 0.333... is better represented by the nearest fraction with a small denominator (1/3).
Woodworkers and machinists often need the nearest 1/16 or 1/64 inch: set the maximum denominator to 16 or 64. The percentage and the rounding error are shown so you can judge how close the fraction is.
